All You Need to Know About the Kannada Wedding

Kannada second marriage usually happens when two people who are separated from a previous marriage fall in love with each other. The separation usually happens due to miss commitments, lack of trust, and loss of a sign that leads couples towards divorce. In these cases, the Karnataka people allow second marriage matrimony to both brides and grooms.

Once two people come together and agree to spend their whole life with each other, a series of events takes place during any Kannada matrimony. A matrimonial ceremony is held and traditional rituals performed.

Let’s see what types of events take place in a Kannada marriage ceremony, shall we?

Kannada Second Marriage Rituals

Kannada weddings are short and simple. They put more emphasis on their rituals and traditional cultures rather than the usual big and fancy protocols. There is a slight difference in the rituals among the Karnataka people. However, these rituals are usually built on the same basis.

Naandi - This is a Kannada matrimonial event that is held a few days before the wedding. It is held in both the bride’s and the groom's places. This is done to ensure that the wedding pushes through successfully. It also marks the start of the wedding ceremony.

Nischay Tamulam – this is equivalent to the engagement ceremony. This is where horoscopes of both Kannada bride and groom are matched and the stars well aligned. This symbolizes a happy and great future and parents then share betel leaves and nuts.

During Nischay Tamulam, the parents of the bride visit the parents of the groom and exchange gifts which include; fruits, coconut, sweets, and clothes. It is also when the priests set the date of the marriage.

DevKarya – This usually happens on the wedding day. While leaving his house, the groom visits temples to offer sacrifices and seek blessings.

Okhili - this ceremony is held after the wedding. Games are played between both families to get to know each other better.

Vidaai - this is an important matrimonial event that is held for the bride to bid goodbye to her family. It is usually filled with gifts, surprises, love, and emotions.

GrihaPravesh – here’s a ritual where the groom’s family welcomes the bride at her new home and family.

Clothes presentation - alongside other gifts, clothes are presented by the groom to the bride. She has to wear them at different ritual ceremonies.

Name change ceremony – Yes, you might be surprised to know that but this is the reality. As the bride has already been welcomed by her in-laws in GrihaPravesh. In this matrimonial event, the groom is required to decide a name for his bride.

Visiting the brides’ house – during this ceremony, the bride's family visits the newlyweds and brings them to spend at least one night at their house after which they return to their new home.

Reception – this is the last ceremony that is held for the bride to be introduced to the other family members of the groom.

These pre-wedding or post-wedding rituals are performed before and after the Kannada matrimonial ceremony. There are also a couple of rituals performed during the Kannada Wedding. They include:

·         The groom’s party

·         Mandap Puja

·         VarPuja

·         Jaimala

·         Dhareherdu

·         Saptapadi

The Kannada wedding ceremonies are not for show. They are mostly held to see to it that their traditional cultures and rituals are observed.
